Buy Waikato, Hire Waikato

Waikato, NZ – Tuakau-Pokeno ward councillor candidate Fabio Rodrigues today unveiled his Buy Waikato, Hire Waikato policy to reward small and medium-sized businesses that employ local workers. The policy offers targeted rate rebates to businesses that commit to hiring Waikato residents — helping local businesses grow while putting more people into good jobs.

“Local jobs mean stronger families and thriving communities,” Rodrigues said. “Small businesses are the backbone of our district. My plan rewards those who invest in their community by giving them real relief on their rates.”

How It Works

  • Businesses within Waikato District with fewer than 50 full-time staff can qualify

  • Must employ at least 60% of their workforce locally

  • Rebates start at 10% for businesses with 50–89% local staff

  • 15% off rates for 90–99% local staff

  • 20% off for businesses staffed 100% by Waikato residents

  • Rebates capped at $1,000 annually per business

Easy to Apply

Businesses apply once a year through a simple online or in-person process, providing proof of local hires. Council then reviews eligibility and applies rebates the following year.

Why This Matters

This policy keeps money circulating in Waikato. It supports local businesses, creates more jobs for residents, and builds stronger communities. It’s an investment in our future — because when Waikato businesses thrive, Waikato people win.
